IN FOCUS
Portugal’s sun-drenched
Algarve is home to
multiple delights —
flower-covered hillsides,
whitewashed houses on
jutting cliffs, and ocean-
view golf courses — but
its beaches are the main
draw. Some of the most
celebrated in Europe, in
summer they become
playgrounds for travelers
from across the globe. So
it’s no surprise that the
Algarve hosts the
International Sand
Sculpture Festival
(fiesa.org), an epic annual
exhibition that brings
sculptors from around the
world to create larger-
than-life works of art out
of only sand and water.
Built to resist wind and
rain during the five-
month-long affair (usually
May to October), the
sculptures are eventually
returned to just plain
sand. Each year the
artwork celebrates a
different theme; in the
past these have included
the animal kingdom,
discoveries, and
Hollywood (as shown at
left in an interpretation of
a
Lord of the Rings
scene).
