Kangaroo Theater
GWEN AND FRANK MCCARTHY
AND
Watching kangaroos leap across the grounds of a lush resort in Australia
sounds too good to be true, right? Not for Gwen and Frank McCarthy, who
encountered a mob of marsupials as they turned into the driveway of their
South Australia resort. And that was hardly the only sighting during their
exchange vacation: “Every morning and late afternoon,” Gwen says, “dozens
of gray kangaroos came out of the hills and surrounded the resort and
mingled on the golf course.” Gwen and Frank enjoyed a wealth of activities
in South Australia, including sightseeing in Adelaide and a ferry trip to
Kangaroo Island. And with an exchange in Victoria the following week,
they were also able to “get away from the large cities on the coast and
experience a more small-town Australia,” says Gwen. The couple soaked
up the area’s history, environment, and arts, enjoying everything from bird-
watching to local theater.
The Vacation Generation
DAVE AND LINDA CARVER
When your resort is mere minutes from the beach and big enough to host your
extended family, it’s just too good to keep all to yourself. That’s what Dave and
Linda Carver were thinking when they invited their Colorado-based daughter
and grandchildren along on their Hilton Head vacation exchange. For the kids’
introduction to the East Coast, they “spent many idyllic hours swimming, walk-
ing in the sand, and searching for shells,” Linda says. “Sand dollars and starfish
created great excitement!”The family enjoyed dolphin-watching on an evening
cruise, exploring the Coastal Discovery Museum, and cheering on the Carvers’
grandson David as he tested out a boogie board. After a week of family bond-
ing — which included devouring seafood every single day — the group con-
cluded their trip with a night walk on the beach. “We stayed long past dark,
taking photos and trying to memorize all of the beautiful sights,” Linda says.
“No one wanted this vacation to end.”
