IN FOCUS
Among South Florida’s myriad global connections is a link to Japanese tradition. Between Fort Lauderdale and the
town of Palm Beach, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens (morikami.org) offers authentic experiences in
Japanese culture. The establishment is a living monument to the Yamato Colony, formed by a group of young farmers
from Japan who aimed to revolutionize Florida agriculture in the early 1900s. Their experiment failed, and they drifted
away, until only one remained: George Sukeji Morikami. He donated his land to Palm Beach County, and on it a center
for Japanese heritage was created. Today the 200-plus tranquil acres feature rock gardens, waterfalls, lakes, bridges,
and a bonsai collection. A formal tea ceremony is hosted monthly, and the on-site cafe has been lauded by the Food
Network as a top U.S. museum dining experience. The Morikami Museum Collection comprises permanent and
rotating exhibits, including 5,000 Japanese artifacts.
