SHOW-STOPPING SETTING
A new cultural venue has opened in Salt Lake City, less than an hour’s drive from the Park City
area. The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater boasts a 2,500-seat performance hall
with lighting inspired by a starlit Utah canyon, a 150-seat Black Box theater, and the Encore
Bistro. Its six-story lobby was designed with retractable glass walls, which can be opened out
onto the adjacent plaza. Upcoming summer performances include Dirty Dancing from June 20
to 25, and The Book of Mormon from August 1 to 20.
The largest aquatic museum in the
southwestern U.S. has opened its
doors. The 200,000-plus-square-foot
OdySea Aquarium includes more than
50 exhibits that are home to over 500
different species. Visitors can stroll
through a Great Barrier Reef tunnel
to view clownfish and sea anemone,
feel whip rays and nurse sharks at
the touch pools, and ride an under-
water escalator through the Sharks
of the Deep attraction. There’s also a
3-D film and interactive experiences
that allow up-close encounters with
African black-footed penguins.

NOT A MIRAGE
Man-made beauty can be found in the most unexpected of places,
and the desert sands outside of Las Vegas are no exception. Located
near Interstate 15, some 10 miles south of Sin City, Swiss artist Ugo
Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains stands in sharp contrast to its
muted surroundings. On display through 2018, the large-scale
public-art installation consists of seven towers made of brightly
painted, stacked boulders standing 30-plus-feet high. Visitors can
learn about the work through on-site interpretive signage or audio
information accessed via cell phone.
The latest creation from the minds behind the Xcaret and Xplor theme parks: Xenses, an attraction
designed to challenge visitors’ minds and bodies and awaken their senses. Park highlights include
the Pinwheel, home to a mirror labyrinth, a synchronized lights-and-music game, and kaleidoscopes; the
Xensatorium, where jungle, desert, forest, and other ecosystems are represented through sights and
sounds; Bird Flight, which gives visitors the chance to soar through the sky on a zip line; and Slip, a
thrilling water slide that passes through a dark tunnel to an unexpected finish.
