Breathe in the fresh mountain air in this classic
vacation destination. Its lakes, streams, and
forests are the perfect setting for days spent
in the great outdoors.
What to do: Embark on as many nature
excursions as your visit allows. Explore on foot
from miles of hiking trails, or head into the
woods on horseback. Glide high above the
treetops on a zip line, or go for a long bike ride.
And if you love bird-watching, there are plenty of
species to spot.
Where to do it: Dubbed the Niagara of
Pennsylvania, Bushkill Falls is home to eight
waterfalls and a network of trails and bridges.
There is also a wildlife exhibit, paddleboats, pic-
nic areas, and a maze. And keep your eyes
peeled for wildlife: Sightings can range from rab-
bits and white-tail deer to black bears and
raccoons.
Why go now: With temperatures at their
warmest, it’s the perfect season to experience
the greener, sans-skis side of the Poconos. And
there’s no better time for some soaking-wet fun
with the opening of two waterparks, including a
retractable-roof park at Kalahari Resort at
Pocono Mountain and the multilevel Aquatopia
Indoor Waterpark.
Insider’s tip: For a bit of local lore, take a
tour of The Old Jail Museum, a 72-room stone
structure with 27 cells and a basement used for
solitary confinement until 1980. Learn the story
of the Molly Maguires, seven Irish coal miners
who were hung from the gallows in the 1870s,
and witness the mysterious handprint of a pris-
oner that lingers to this day.
