FATHOM FIVE NATIONAL MARINE PARK

Fathom Five National Marine Park encompasses

towering cliffs topped by sprawling forest, and

20 islands dotted about Lake Huron and the

Georgian Bay. And resting beneath the water’s surface is the

park’s most unique feature — the 22 historical shipwrecks that

lie scattered across the rugged 420-million-year-old dolomite

lake floor.

Consisting of vessels dating to the 19th and early 20th

centuries, these sites offer excellent visibility and draw around

8,000 divers per year. The sunken ships — some located just

offshore and easily accessible by boat — range from schoon-

ers, passenger steamers, and tug boats (ideal for snorkeling).

And while a few were deliberately sunk as contributions to the

underwater playground, most have a tragic story to tell. The

eroded hulls and fallen masts are evidence of an unfortunate

fate. The wrecks are time capsules, giving visitors a glimpse of

the area’s seafaring past and keeping its maritime history alive.
