You don’t have to be an art connoisseur to enjoy
San José del Cabo’s Art Walk, which takes place
every Thursday evening from November to June.
The galleries clustered behind the city’s main
square stay open late so that visitors can learn more about the works on hand and meet
the artists. The main street is closed to traffic during this time, so you can stroll the neigh-
borhood’s cobblestone streets and wander in and out of the different galleries at your own
pace. Sip a glass of wine, take in the laid-back atmosphere, and admire paintings, sculp-
tures, and other pieces by some of Baja’s finest artists.

MAYAN RELICS
Cancún may be the perfect setting to relax and clear your mind, but the
thought-provoking exhibitions at the Museo Maya de Cancún are well worth
a visit. The museum has a total of 3,500 artifacts, with some 350 pieces
on display at a time. Two permanent exhibition halls take visitors through
an extensive timeline of Mayan history and culture. A third gallery features
rotating and traveling exhibits, and behind it is the noteworthy La Mujer
de las Palmas (The Woman of the Palms): skeletal remains that date back
about 10,000 years, found in a cenote near Tulum. After strolling through the
indoor installations, step outside to explore the San Miguelito archeological
site, which includes a 26-foot-tall pyramid and around 40 ancient structures.

Locked away for some 50 years, Frida
Kahlo’s personal belongings are now
being showcased at the Victoria and Albert
Museum in London. The exhibit, Frida
Kahlo: Making Her Self Up, chronicles the
iconic Mexican artist’s life through her
intimate possessions, from her stylish
clothes and bold jewelry to her plaster
corsets and red leather–booted prosthetic
leg. Unsealed from her house outside of
Mexico City in 2004, the collection of 200
or so objects has never been displayed out-
side of Mexico until now. The show, which
runs until Nov.4,also includes photographs
of Kahlo, as well as some of her artwork.
